The First Love of Jose Rizal
by Pauline D. Andres
There’s a famous saying, “First love never dies.” What if your first love was bound to marry another man? Of course, you’ll let her go. Such was the case of Jose Rizal and Segunda Katigbak, a Batangueña, whom Rizal met when he was only a 16-year-old boy. They met when Rizal visited his grandmother with his friend, Mariano Katigbak, Segunda’s brother. It was love at first sight, and they became very close. However, Segunda was already married to a man who lived in her town, and Rizal had to stop pursuing her.
“Ended, at an early house, my first love! My virgin heart will always mourn the reckless step it took on the flower-decked abyss. My illusions will return, yes, but indifferent, uncertain, ready for the first betrayal on the path of love.”
-Jose Rizal

Entering UST, Rizal was torn as he was uncertain about what program to take up. But he ended up signing for Philosophy and Letters during his first year, his grades were impressively high. After finishing his freshman year, he shifted to Medicine due to certain factors. His grades then were not as good compared to when he was in Ateneo. According to him, he was unsatisfied about his stay in the university because the system they had was not aligned with his principles. And this reflected upon his poor performance.

Intramuros Manila

Leonor Valenzuela, known for Orang is literally the girl-next-door. He met Orang in the Doña Concha Leyva’s boarding house in Intramuros, Manila as his neighbor. She was also his province-mate from Pagsanjan Laguna that made her very accommodating. He finally moved on from his recent unsuccessful love story, and frequently visited Orang's house even without gathering. During their courtship, he sent Orang private and secret love letters. It is mysteriously written in invisible ink made of table salt and water. To read the letters, Orang had to heat it over a lamp and candle. She was so confused on why she was courted in that way. And Orang started to think that his love for her started to fade away. She was his second subject of affection and that is one fact that will remain the same.
