A Summer Time in Belgium
by Sherwin Azares
To economize his expenses, he immediately left the expensive city of Paris in 1890. He went to Belgium during the summer time, a good season to seek opportunity. At the age of 29, he met a Belgian lady named Suzanne Jacoby. He stayed in a boarding house managed by the Jacoby sisters in Bruzzels. Suzanne also called 'petite' was attracted to him for being skillful and enigmatic who doesn't cause any troubles. He had some romantic intimacy with Petite and they both enjoyed Belgium’s summertime festival that indeed unforgettable. But their relationship was not serious enough that made their summer also painful. He was too busy writing El Fili, contributing to La Solidaridad, and worrying about his family. Their relationship was just a fling, too quick and too unlikely. Suzanne shed tears when he left Belgium in the beginning of August 1890. They have to move on with their lives and face their reality. And that's how their one summer time story ends that is definitely unhappy.
